Tonya Harding

"Tonya Harding’s love of figure skating began at age three when she visited the ice rink at Portland’s Lloyd Center mall in Oregon. Despite growing up in a financially struggling family and facing a difficult childhood, Tonya quickly demonstrated extraordinary natural talent. Her mother, LaVona, eventually helped her find a coach, Diane Rawlinson, who recognized her potential. Tonya won her first skating competition at age five and continued developing her athletic abilities. By her teenage years, she was known for her powerful jumps, speed, and remarkable spins. Her determination helped her rise to the highest levels of competitive figure skating despite the financial and personal challenges she faced.

In 1991, Tonya won her first U.S. National Figure Skating Championship and made history by becoming the first American woman to successfully land a triple axel during competition. This difficult jump established her as one of the sport’s most accomplished athletes. She also won a silver medal at the World Championships and achieved additional success at international competitions. Tonya competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, finishing fourth. Her athletic achievements made her a standout figure skater, and she returned to win another U.S. national title in 1994, earning a place on the Olympic team for the Lillehammer Winter Olympics.

However, Tonya’s skating career was forever changed by the 1994 attack on fellow American figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. The attack was connected to Tonya’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, and others who conspired to injure Kerrigan. Tonya has maintained that she did not participate in planning the attack, although she later pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution. The scandal overshadowed her athletic accomplishments, and she was subsequently banned from competitive figure skating by the U.S. Figure Skating Association. Losing the sport that had defined her life was a devastating turning point. In the years that followed, Tonya explored other opportunities, including professional boxing, acting, television appearances, and public speaking. She also returned to skating on several occasions, demonstrating that her passion for the sport had never disappeared.

Throughout her life, Tonya has spoken about the difficulties she experienced growing up, including abuse and financial hardship, as well as the challenges she faced in adulthood. She has used her experiences to encourage others who have endured difficult circumstances, particularly people affected by domestic violence. Her story received renewed public attention through documentaries and the 2017 film I, Tonya, starring Margot Robbie as Tonya and Allison Janney as her mother. The film received critical acclaim, and Janney won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Tonya also reached new audiences through appearances on Dancing with the Stars, where she finished third, and Worst Cooks in America, which she won in the celebrity competition, earning $25,000 for her chosen charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Tonya Harding’s life has been marked by extraordinary athletic accomplishments, public controversy, and repeated efforts to find a new direction. Beyond figure skating, she has pursued diverse interests, including boxing, acting, and setting a land-speed record in a vintage car in 2008. Although the 1994 scandal remains a defining part of her public image, her story also reflects the determination required to overcome adversity and rebuild a life after major setbacks. From her early days at Portland’s Lloyd Center rink to her achievements in sports and entertainment, Tonya remains a recognizable figure in American popular culture whose life continues to generate interest and discussion."

Rohene Ward

"My name is Rohene Ward, and I am an Afro-Latino American figure skater, choreographer, and performer. My journey began at the age of seven during a school field trip to Parade Ice Gardens in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That experience changed the trajectory of my life. Skating became my safety net, my sanctuary, and my escape route out of the hood. It gave me purpose, direction, and a way to express myself when words were not enough.

I competed for 18 years, winning numerous Regional and Sectional championships. My competitive career included competing in the 1996 Junior Olympics, qualifying for the U.S. National Championships seven times, and representing Team USA on multiple occasions. In 2004, I made history as the first-ever Puerto Rican National Champion. In 2016, I was named US Open Grand Champion.

My professional performing career has taken me around the world. I was a principal performer with Holiday on Ice for approximately 10 years and was part of Ebony on Ice, the groundbreaking all-Black figure skating show created, produced, and directed by Rory Flack in 2002. More recently, I toured with Ice Dance International for two years as both a performer and choreographer. Performing remains my most powerful form of communication.

As a choreographer, I am a four-time recipient of the Professional Skaters Association's Paul McGrath Choreographer of the Year Award (2015, 2017, 2021, and 2023). In 2023, I also received the PSA Inspire EDI Award in recognition of my commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in the skating community.

For more than 20 years, I have had the privilege of choreographing for Jason Brown. I have also worked with many of the sport's extraordinary talents, including Madison Chock and Evan Bates, Alysa Liu, Kaori Sakamoto, Amber Glenn, Mariah Bell, Jacob Sanchez, Maé-Bérénice Méité, and Sofie Joline von Felten, among others.

Skating is my first love and a love that will last a lifetime. Through every challenge, it has remained a constant in my life—a place of refuge, resilience, and possibility. It has given me the ability to connect with people in a way that transcends words, cultures, and backgrounds. The greatest gift I can give is the ability to make people feel through music and movement. That is the gift I share with the world, and it is the same gift skating has given me. Skating gave me a voice, a purpose, and a life beyond what I once imagined possible. And for that, I will forever be grateful."

Rory flack

"Rory Flack is a pioneering figure skater, performer, choreographer, coach, and producer whose career has helped break barriers and expand representation in the world of figure skating. Born in Belleville, Illinois, Rory discovered her love for skating at just five years old. Throughout her journey, she navigated the challenges of pursuing a career in a sport where Black athletes were rarely represented. Inspired by the mentorship of legendary figure skating pioneer Mabel Fairbanks, Rory developed a passion not only for skating, but also for creating opportunities for others to follow their dreams.

As a competitive and professional skater, Rory distinguished herself through her athleticism, originality, and expressive artistry. She earned the junior bronze medal at the 1986 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and went on to make history as the first African American woman to publicly perform a backflip on the ice in a professional setting in 1991. In 1994, she became the first African American woman to win the U.S. Open Professional Figure Skating Championships. Her fearless performances, signature Russian splits, and dynamic style established her as a memorable presence in the skating world.

Beyond her accomplishments as a performer, Rory has dedicated much of her career to mentorship, choreography, and creative production. In 2002, she created, produced, and choreographed Ebony on Ice, a groundbreaking all-Black figure skating production featuring talented performers, including Rohene Ward. The show celebrated Black culture, music, movement, and artistry while providing a platform for skaters to be seen and celebrated. More than an entertainment production, Ebony on Ice represented Rory's vision of a skating community where diversity was embraced and young athletes could see themselves reflected on the ice.

Rory's commitment to developing the next generation continues through her work as a coach and mentor, including her involvement with the Artistry of Movement Ice Skating Academy. Through her teaching and creative work, she encourages skaters to discover their individuality, connect with music, and use movement as a form of storytelling. Her commitment to greater inclusion also reached television audiences through Breaking the Ice, a docuseries following Team DMV, a diverse youth synchronized skating team navigating the challenges of competitive skating.

Throughout her career, Rory Flack has remained committed to using skating as a vehicle for artistic expression, empowerment, and change. Her legacy extends beyond the medals she earned and the barriers she broke; it lives in the performers she has inspired, the opportunities she has created, and the doors she continues to open for future generations. Through her artistry, leadership, and unwavering dedication, Rory reminds us that figure skating belongs to everyone—and that representation can transform not only a sport, but the lives of those who dare to dream within it."

Jerry & tally Leonard

"Tally and I met through a common ice skating instructor from Portland who taught at the seasonal rink in Yakima on the weekends. She said we had a similar style of skating and would be good partners for each other. I was with a group of Yakima skaters who drove to the Silver Skate Ice Arena in Portland during a school holiday on Washington"s birthday February 22, 2967. Tally and I skated that day and didn't realize that this was the beginning of a life long partnership having just celebrated 55 years of marriage. After school let out for the summer I moved to Portland and lived  with Tally's parents. After a summer of skating and testing I was granted permission to complete my senior year at David Douglas High School.

We competed in USFSA dance competitions during 1967 through 1970. Three times at the Northwest Regionals winning twice, three times at the Pacific Coast Sectionals, and twice at the US Nationals placing 3rd in 1969.

Limited free time did not allow us to skate during my four years attending dental school. Also, we were soon to be raising two wonderful sons Jerry Jr., and Matthew. opening a solo dental practice allowed us to design a schedule that worked with skating. It was great to have Tally work in the office as a part time dental assistant.

For nearly 60 years Tally and I skated at the Lloyd Center Ice Arena and for decades four times a week. We were provided the ability to play our owen music rink side and did a performance each day. Before performing after an ice cleaning we would pray to God that we not trip or fall, that somebody would enjoy what we do, and that all of the skaters today would have fun and not get hurt. So many wonderful people to skate for. Tally and I were extremely honored to be asked by the Lloyd Center Mall management team to skate the final ice skating performance during the Mall Closing Ceremonies on August 8, 2026. We were overwhelmed by how many people, who had seen us skate through the years, came to watch us and thank us for what we have done together on the ice."

Julia Bennett

"Julia was born and raised in Minnesota, where she began skating at the age of 3. Believing every kid in Minnesota should know how to skate, her parents signed her up for Learn to Skate classes, thinking she might eventually play hockey. Instead, she fell in love with figure skating, and it has been a huge part of her life ever since. Growing up, she explored various skating disciplines, participating in state and regional competitions and performing in theatrical productions through National Showcase and Theatre On Ice. Her passion for performance led her to pursue professional show skating in her favorite place, Sun Valley, Idaho!

Julia is a 5x USFS Gold Medalist in Singles, Skating Skills, Partnered Pattern Dance, Partnered Free Dance and Solo Free Dance. She is also a 2x Minnesota State Medalist and a National Qualifier in Ice Dance. She spent 5 summer seasons performing with Sun Valley On Ice as an ensemble skater, a featured soloist in select shows and a fire assistant to Ashley Clark. Julia continues to perform and embrace wherever skating takes her. Now based in Boise, Idaho, she coaches part-time and strives to instill confidence, determination and joy in her students.

In 2025, Julia graduated summa cum laude from Boise State University with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and minors in Political Communication and Global Studies. Outside of skating and coaching, she works in the Idaho Legislature and on political campaigns. She plans to attend Northeastern University next fall to pursue graduate studies in Public Administration, before returning to Boise to continue coaching and serving her community."
